Overview:

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn how community-based social marketing (CBSM) tools can help you create behaviour change and improve recycling on your college campus. Leading CBSM expert Jay Kassirer will guide us through each of the steps as we learn about University of Alberta's Take Action on Waste campaign and how they utilized CBSM strategies and tools to successfully improve waste diversion at one of their residence communities. This in-depth look at the University of Alberta's case study, will offer valuable insights and lessons including how to: form an effective planning team; determine your campaign's focus and target behaviors; conduct audience research; and develop a successful CBSM strategy.



Speakers:


- Jay Kassirer, B.Sc. MBA CMRP
Jay is a social marketing consultant and trainer, a global expert on Community-Based Social Marketing approaches and a founding Board member of the International Social Marketing Association. He is also the driving force behind the Tools of Change website, which is based on a community-based social marketing (cbsm) workbook he co-authored with Doug McKenzie-Mohr and which features 20 waste behavior change case studies.
Jay is President of Ottawa-based Cullbridge Marketing and Communications. He has 24 years of professional marketing, communications and research experience involving environment, health and sustainability. He was awarded the Certified Marketing Research Professional (CMRP) designation by the Canadian Marketing Research and Intelligence Association and holds a Master of Business Administration Degree in marketing from York University.




-Emily Dietrich, Sustainability Coordinator - Office of Sustainability, University of Alberta

Emily's areas of focus are community-based social marketing projects for waste, green procurement, and leadership and capacity building. Previously, she worked for the Government of Alberta in a similar capacity and also worked extensively in remote Northern communities helping students access post-secondary opportunities. Emily studied arts graduated from the University of Alberta's Teacher Education North program. She is currently half-way through her MBA (UAlberta).






-Shannon Leblanc, Sustainability Coordinator - Energy Management and Sustainable Operations, University of Alberta
Shannon works with various units within the Facilities and Operations portfolio to contribute to the research, development, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and ongoing improvement of sustainability programs and initiatives related to University of Alberta operations. Shannon liaises with and supports students, staff, and faculty members interested in developing projects that further sustainability in campus operations, and she connects with external stakeholders and partners interested in advancing sustainability on campus and in the greater community. In her nearly three years with UAlberta, Shannon has helped to coordinate projects related to waste diversion, food systems, transportation demand management, GHG emissions reporting, and public sustainability reporting (AASHE STARS). Shannon holds a Masters in Microbiology & Biotechnology from UAlberta and formerly co-led a student and staff sustainability advocacy group, the Campus Sustainability Coalition.
