And who had the fellows dressed as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club? I
LOVED them!

I cried over Steven winning the Watonga Bob award, also. I know how much it
meant to Steven. I loved that big, warm, goofy guy, also! And I was so
pleased that Ron Frantz received the Legacy Award! He found out he was
having twins when he was here in Newkirk for a visit! That was pretty
exciting. I was proud that the Newkirk Junior Main Streeters were
recognized. We had five of the very early ones attend - including Michael
who was the reason that it even came to be and Meghan who as a fifth grader
came up with their slogan - "Living in the future to repair the past." Of
the original four we had Michael and Crystal. Jed, of course, gave his life
for his country in Iraq and to honor his memory, we have the Jed Cord
students. One of the original four seems to have dropped off the face of
the earth as we cannot find Sarah. At one time we had ordered them all
Junior Main Street watches with their slogan on them and Tessa still had
hers and wore it. It was an emotional evening for me as this was the first
time in probably 15 years that I had seen these five awesome young adults.

The program was great - thanks state staff, the food was delicious. Great
job with the seating Miss Enid and all the rest of your hard work on this!
Congrats to all the winners. I always let our volunteers know that making
the top three is a win!

Oh, what you, Schaun, just wrote is what the awards are really about . it is
a way to empower and show appreciation to our towns and partners and
volunteers.

Here's my story on the evening:

Sitting at my table with me were two young OPSU football
players from our Football Family program, a high school Main Street
Transformer, and my mom and her husband. When Steven was presented the
Director of the Year Award my mind went back remembering Watonga Bob and his
sweet sense of humor, his kindness, that grin that was so endearing, and his
enthusiastic love of Watonga. I loved being around Watonga Bob, and there
was Steven, who was the Mutt to Watonga Bob's Jeff. They and their wives
were the best of friends and it was a friendship that not everyone gets to
have. And I sat there and cried. FUNNY PART: The football players thought
I was crying because I had lost. Shees. No award and their recipient was so
right, in my mind, as Steven accepting the Watonga Bob Award. Besides,
Steven is a fantastic Main Street Director and has been for over 20 years .
I mean, really?

WAY TO GO EVERYONE .. Way to go to those who took home awards, and way to go
to those who didn't and were there to support all the communities and the
work that the state staff does to put on such a great evening.

Dear Everyone,

I just have to comment on the Board Member of the Year presentation that
Main Street makes every year . I am aware of how honored everyone feels to
receive this, and the excitement that goes along with it. As for Cherokee
Main Street, it was truly special. Phyllis Puffinbarger, nearly 80 now, was
thrilled with this last evening. She kept a smile on her face as she held
it in her lap for the rest of the evening and continued to run her fingers
over the lettering.

I am not sure if this was the first time that she had ever won anything like
this, but it made all of our evening just observing how special this was to
her.

I just had to say thank you for the gift of recognition that you gave her
and for everything you do.

Schaun Aker

Executive Director, Cherokee Main Street

Photos will be available upon request if any of your local media needs them.
I know there were lots of people taking pictures last night as well. :)
