Breakout Session 2: 11:00 am to 11:50 am
* The Art of Positivity in Advising—Mark Nelson, OSU
In the span of their collegiate career, our students experience a multitude of emotions from working with faculty to dealing with personal issues. To better equip and prepare our students for these learning experiences, We discuss and define G.R.I.T. as well as applying the concept to major and career exploration. To be an effective instructor, I have to practice what I teach. I hope to share my methods of positive advising conference attendees in hopes of assisting my peers with cracking the tough cases. If our students can sense and believe in us, they will ultimately believe in themselves.
● Lighting the way for First Generation Students — Dr. Emily Griffin-Overocker, University of Central Oklahoma
At many institutions a record number of first generation students are attending college because earning a college degree is an increasingly necessary requirement for entry into the workforce. Institutions need to identify the struggles these students face and factors that contribute to their success. During this roundtable discussion, participants will share ideas from their campuses and brainstorm effective support strategies.
¨ “What We’ve Got Here is Failure to Communicate”: A Review of Communication
