[Oacrao-l] Collection of Ethnicity Data on Application for Admission

Ours is optional too, and we code them as “decline to identify” if they leave it blank.  I can’t forsee being able to remove the question, however, as we are required to submit ethnicity information for numerous reports like IPEDS that are tied to our federal funding and the admissions application seems like the most convenient way to collect it. We generally only have 1 or 2 students each year who don’t respond to the question.

Does this leave you with a lot of missing biographical information?  We used to ask the information on the enrollment card.   Now that we have so many people enrolling on-line, we don’t collect that information there.

OCU does the same but we follow up once they are admitted with a request for biographical information.

We ask the question by saying “The following information is voluntary and requested for reporting purposes only in accordance with the 1964 Civil Rights Act as amended. Mark all that apply.”  This gives the option of answering or not.
