Subject: Evaluating credentials

Hi Ginna,

We've talked about this in our office and have the following to share regarding Traci's question on the list-serv. I hope this will be helpful!

To consider foreign coursework for transfer credit from a Ministry of Education recognized institution, we require an official translated transcript and course descriptions. The academic advisors and the faculty determine what, if any credit, is awarded and for which TU equivalent course.

Since the actual credit determination is made in the Colleges, one of the advisors might have a better answer. But in answer to the question about foreign high schools since that's more in the realms of our admissions role, we use the following tools and strategies:

1. NAFSA's Guide to Educational Systems Around the World http://www.nafsa.org/Resource_Library_Assets/Publications_Library/Online_Guide_to_Educational_Systems_Around_the_World/
This is a publicly available resource, which provides information about the secondary-school leaving credentials in various countries.

2. School profiles that are included with the Common Application are quite helpful.

3. Direct experience with schools and counselors through recruitment travel.
