[Oacrao-l] Concurrent High School Grades

Holly and OACRAO Colleagues,

State statute mandates that concurrent enrollment students receive high school credit by virtue of completing collegiate coursework. More specifically, 70 O.S. § 628.13.E states:

When a student earns college credit through concurrent enrollment, school districts shall provide academic credit for any concurrently enrolled higher education courses that are correlated with the academic credit awarded by the institution of higher education. Academic credit shall only be transcripted as elective credit if there is no correlation between the concurrent enrollment higher education course and a course provided by the school district.

Thus, every concurrent course is required to result in high school credit, which may be specific course credit or elective course credit. In the end, it is up to the high school to review the college transcript and ultimately determine what high school credit is awarded.

While the high school will need a college transcript to award such credit, there is no statutory mandate or State Regents’ policy that requires a State System institution to send a transcript to the high school.

Based on conversations I’ve had, I know that some State System institutions:
• Place the responsibility on the student to make arrangements for his/her college transcript to be sent to the high school; or
• Create a FERPA release agreement in which a concurrent student signs a document that gives permission to the college to send his/her transcript to the high school.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Respectfully,

Daniel Archer, Ed.D.

Good morning all,

I had a student's mother call me earlier this week asking if we were required to send her daughter's grades to the High School. I told her yes and she said that she heard that it wasn't required. Supposedly there is another school here in Oklahoma that lets the students choose whether their grades are sent back to the high school or not.

The class that she's asking about specifically, is an extra class. She didn't need it to complete her required amount of credits at the high school. She doesn't mind the grade being sent to other colleges of course, it's just having it sent back to the high school brings down her class ranking status.

I looked through Regents policy and the handbook and couldn't find anything that would confirm that what she is saying is allowed. Does anyone else do this and if so can you send me what you require, if anything, in order for this to occur?

Sincerely,
