[Oacrao-l] FW: Certificates and Degrees

Hi everyone,

Oklahoma State changed language in our University Academic Regulation on Graduation Applications<http://catalog.okstate.edu/university-academic-regulations/#UAR-7.8> effective Fall 2023 making them an expectation as opposed to a requirement to graduate. We also revised our Graduation Requirements regulation<http://catalog.okstate.edu/university-academic-regulations/#UAR-7.1> to clarify that credentials are conferred after the end of the term upon institutional verification that requirements have been met, and to indicate that students who wish to be notified before their credential is conferred must submit a graduation hold request<https://registrar.okstate.edu/site-files/documents/student-graduation-hold-request.pdf> before the end of their final term. We have continued with the same messaging to students about graduation applications and deadlines, and our degree clearance processes prioritize students with an active graduation application.

Renee,
In our annual notification, we state that the NOC email is the primary means of communication.  I send an email to all students letting them know the deadline for application for graduation and state the primary purpose is for inclusion in the graduation program and various honor programs.  At the end of every semester, I run a report to see who has completed 60 hours and NOT applied for graduation.  I degree audit those students. If they qualify for graduation, I send an email to their NOC email account, copying their academic advisor, congratulating them and giving them a defined time to reply to say they do not want the degree.  So far, no one has turned down the degree and most respond saying they were not aware they met the requirements for graduation (sigh!!!) and they also usually respond they had not had a conversation with their academic advisor (sigh!!! Sigh!!!).  Sometime when I am not on email, I will let you know my true feelings on the subject.  We have limited certificates, but do the same.  Depending on the semester, I have a nice chunk of grads to add to those who applied.  I hope this helps.

Do you require your students to apply to receive a certificate/degree or do you automatically award them upon completion?
