Background:

KESAM SP (K-8 Scholars Appreciating Mathematics, Statewide Partnerships:
A Hands-on, Brains-on Journey of Excellence), is an effective statewide
professional development program serving Oklahoma teachers for several
years. KESAM has developed statewide partnership learning centers at
SWOSU, NEO, and CASC, serving K-8 teachers from all parts of the state.
The following map of Oklahoma shows the three regions and public schools
served in each region in 2010. KESAM has served over 500 teachers
directly, and impacted hundreds more and thousands students indirectly
in the past few years. This demonstrates the success of the project
teaching conceptual understanding of Mathematics in Oklahoma. These
partnerships offer an excellent example of the highly effective, high
quality program called for in The Elementary and Secondary Education Act
(ESEA), under provisions of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act 2001 and
Improving Teacher Quality (ITQ). The evaluations from previous SWOSU
OSRHE/NCLB projects verify that KESAM Mathematics Institutes provide the
resources, personnel, concepts, materials, and enthusiasm to have
sustainable effects on the participating teachers' pedagogical content
knowledge and have a strong impact on the participants' students'
achievement.

RE: Oklahoma Mathematics SUMMIT, March 3, 10-12:30, Chesapeake Room,
Oklahoma History Center

Good Morning!

Southwestern Oklahoma State University with support from the US
Department of Education and the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher
Education is hosting a brief summit concerning improved teaching and
learning of mathematics. This is an opportunity for key stakeholders
across the leadership spectrum in Oklahoma to meet at an informal,
neutral site to see best practices at work, to discuss viable,
inexpensive methods of improvement, and meet with dedicated teachers
from all regions of Oklahoma who are making a significant difference in
their students' attitudes and performances in mathematics and the
learning culture of their schools.

Please look over the attached invitation, summit outline, and sample
comments from principals and teachers. If you can make it, we shall
look forward to the privilege of sharing time with you. If not, please
pass this along to one other leader who you know to have a deep concern
and interest in improving mathematics education across our great state.

Please RSVP to Dr. John Woods, john.woods at swosu.edu
