Here is a brief review of the article "Funding Great Science in Tight Fiscal Times," by Sally J. Rocky at NIH. The article appears in the August 2013 NCURA Magazine, and is available to members at the NCURA website. If you would like a copy of the article, I will be happy to obtain it for you. My personal addition is that the suggestions are appropriate to all great fields, not just great science.

FUNDING GREAT SCIENCE IN TIGHT FISCAL TIMES

* Identify and manage funding overlaps. This includes all existing and pending financial resources, research grants, cooperative agreements, contracts and organizational awards. Overlap is no necessarily a negative, but it needs to be managed correctly.

* Encourage scientific collaborations. Great scientific value happens when investigators combine their ideas and efforts to study problems. This can lead to more efficient use of resources.

* Engage the community in a discussion on how best to use research funds. Since multiple stakeholders are involved with scientific research results, it is important to review options for the best use of funds.

* Train the future biomedical research workforce effectively and efficiently. Biomedical research training is taking too long, and we are not preparing our students for the full complement of research and research positions they will hold. [My inserted note: undergraduate research and ethics education are imperative in all research plans!]

The most important of all the initiatives discussed here is collaboration with the research community. The scientists conducting the research and the research administrators who are providing the support are responsible for keeping the research rocking!
