This is a free webinar that may be of use for you and your policy makers regarding bypassing the Sponsored Programs office to seek funding through Crowdfunding. See how to register below:
With federal and state funding for science on the downward trend, many young scientists are bypassing the grant writing process and appealing directly to the public via the Internet for money to support their research. Crowdfunding, as it is known, holds huge potential for scientists who can effectively capture the imagination of the public and get them to open their wallets in support of science.
In AAAS MemberCentral’s webinar "Appealing to the online community for research money", we’ll look at #SciFund Challange, a website that helps researchers get their projects funded by the public, and we’ll also hear from two scientists who successfully funded their projects via the crowd. We’ll find out what they learned along the way, share tips on how to reach your funding goal and give you an opportunity to ask the panelists questions.

With federal and state funding for science flat or on the downward trend, many young scientists are looking for new ways to support their research. One way is crowdfunding, appealing directly to the public via the Internet for money. Crowdfunding holds huge potential for scientists who can effectively capture the imagination of the public and get them to open their wallets in support of science.

Assistant Professor, Department of Biology, University of Massachusetts Boston
Jarrett Byrnes is an assistant professor, University of Massachusetts Boston. His research focuses on the causes and consequences of food web complexity in marine systems. Byrnes is the co-founder of #SciFundChallenge<http://app.aaas-science.org/e/er?s=1906&lid=26142&elq=ed04408f51b445029462177a790b4a6e>, a website that helps scientists use crowdfuding to fund their research and as a way to get scientists to directly engage with the public. In 2011, his #SciFund project Hey! Where's that fish?!" received $4,600. Byrnes is also the author of the science blog im a chordata! urochordata!<http://app.aaas-science.org/e/er?s=1906&lid=26143&elq=ed04408f51b445029462177a790b4a6e> He received his undergraduate degree in biology from Brown University, and his Ph.D in population biology from UC-Davis. Erica Hermsen
MS Conservation Biology, Candidate
Antioch University New England
Erica Hermsen just completed her M.S. in Conservation Biology at Antioch University New England in Keene, New Hampshire. Her thesis focused on evaluating the effectiveness of a variety of bait types at luring cheetahs to target sites. In the summers of 2011 and 2012, Erica set up 35 motion-triggered camera traps in southern Kenya and evaluated the photographs to determine the frequency of visitation of cheetahs to different baits. She successfully raised $3,212 crowdfunding through the site Petridish.org<http://app.aaas-science.org/e/er?s=1906&lid=26144&elq=ed04408f51b445029462177a790b4a6e>. The money helped fund five bait stations. Results were provided to the Kenya Wildlife Service and the not-for-profit project Action for Cheetahs in Kenya (ACK) to be used in future radio-collaring efforts. Erica works full-time as a consultant with Shaw Environmental and as ACK's Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator.

In 2006, Ethan received a doctorate in molecular and cell biology from Harvard University, working in the chemical biology lab of Professor Stuart Schreiber. Ethan just completed a five-year independent postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University studying how complex drugs work in simple organisms, an approach he calls evolutionary pharmacology. Ethan is currently working on a record-breaking $25,000 crowdfunding project<http://app.aaas-science.org/e/er?s=1906&lid=26145&elq=ed04408f51b445029462177a790b4a6e> to determine where amphetamines accumulate in the mouse brain.
