Do not be afraid to give your time to writing grant proposals. Time given to planning proposals is never time lost, but is rather time gained, so that our research, our programs, our collaborations and indeed our whole profession may become more profoundly significant.

Subject: [curl] International REU experience for students at PUI- deadline for applications February 1

The University of North Carolina Greensboro has been awarded a three year NSF grant to create a new International Research Experiences for Undergraduates site. We will use funding from this grant to support at least eight students from colleges/universities in the Greensboro, NC and from smaller institutions nationwide in the summer of 2014. Students selected will carry out seven weeks summer research at the Universities of Bristol and Bath in the United Kingdom. The participants will be provided with a first class international experience, which will give them the opportunity to undertake cutting edge research in organic and organometallic chemistry at an extremely well-equipped major research university. Participants will be awarded a stipend of at least $4,000 and all travel and accommodation costs will be covered by the program. Participants will be responsible for their day to day living expenses, such as food and entertainment. The participants can receive up to six hours of credit for undergraduate research courses and two hours of credit for CHE 555 Organometallics. The program will run in Bristol and Bath from late June, 2014 thru mid-August, 2014. Participants will be required to participate in a 20 hour pre-departure program on-line in May and June. Applications are now welcomed from ALL chemistry and biochemistry majors nationwide, but priority will be given to: (i) Students enrolled in UNCG's Lloyd International Honors College, (ii) Students from the Piedmont Educational Research Consortium, PERC, which is a consortium of the Departments of Chemistry of the diverse greater Greensboro area institutions of higher education, (iii) Students from smaller institutions nationwide and (iv) Students with prior undergraduate research experiences, especially those in organic or organometallic synthesis.
The minimum requirements are risng junior status, a GPA of 2.8 (on a four point scale) and one semester's research or internship experience.

Applications are due by February 1, 2014. The applications must be submitted electronically at:
