The OSHRE consortium met today to plan and discuss. We decided to delay upgrading our production environment to 10.1. Though 10.1 comes with some great features, we feel our faculty need more time to become familiar with the changes from the last upgrade before moving into 10.1. To be honest, we have been burned by omissions on the part of D2L support to verify that services were restarted properly after installation. This has been documented to be the major source of problems in recent applications of service packs and upgrades.

Since we already have a maintenance window on January 2, 2013. Frank Hedges is investigating the possibility of upgrading our server to Windows 2008. That way, when we do upgrade to a future D2L version, the O.S. will be ready and tested on our current version. Would you please confirm when you have cancelled the upgrade to 10.1 on our production environment? I will let Frank communicate further with you and D2L support about details he needs to make sure we can switch over our D2L instance to Windows 2008 on January 2nd to take advantage of our planned outage if possible. Nov. 26th is the soonest we can upgrade your test environment – We’ve added you to the cancellation list in case something else opens up.

The Production upgrade has been move to January 2, 2012.

Sooner is better. TEST can be any time since we don’t have active users on it.

Once you have the dates for the upgrade worked out, would you please check on something for me? I submitted ticket # INC00200377 on 8/15/12 concerning the same content issue on TEST that we had on PROD. I cannot view content on the TEST site at all. I documented in the ticket what D2L Tech Support did on PROD to fix the issue. I assume they can do the same thing to fix TEST. I would like to have this fixed as soon as we can. Otherwise, the TEST site isn’t very helpful. Thanks.

Well the Maymester goes form May 13th-June 5th.  If we did after hours installation, I guess if they were late maybe after 8-9 pm if that’s even possible, it might work but what I am concerned about is if we do that, I still have a lot of faculty and students who work on D2L during the evening.   But I cannot do May 30th -June 1st because those are the nursing doctorial intensives and they are very intense and serious and students/faculty will need access to D2L most of the time.

I don’t mind waiting on an upgrade if necessary but May would be a bad time for us because we start summer “Maymester” courses immediately after graduation.  If we don’t upgrade in December or early January, then OCU will need to wait until August after the 2nd.

Below are the comments from each of the member schools on the OSHRE server to help in scheduling D2L upgrades. TEST can be upgraded any time. It looks like the best time to upgrade PROD is the 3rd week in December (15-21) or the 1st week in January (4-7). If we can schedule an off-hours time in the 2nd half of May, that would be acceptable too. If you expect a roll-out of after-hours installation services before May, would you schedule an upgrade on PROD for that timeframe? We would cancel before the end of March if we find a concern on TEST. Does that sound good everyone? I hope this helps.

Worst time to upgrade:
The week before school starts in the Fall because it is just too chaotic, and the issue with trying to squeeze in between is that we have programs that go beyond our regular school hours like the nursing doctorial.  It wouldn’t quite so bad if we could upgrade during off hours.  If we can do that, then times like in between the last week in May and first week of June wouldn’t be too bad.

Best times to upgrade:
Jan: beginning of the first week before the 3rd or the 2nd week
Dec: 3rd  week
August: 2nd week

Other comments:
Same comment as Karen.

August. We have interim courses. Many faculty ignore communication about upgrade until it is impending. An August date is too far in the future for most faculty to be concerned. Then, they return from summer break and it is too late.

If D2L rolls out after hours upgrades, it may open more options.
