The presentation at 9:00 should be of special interest to everyone in
ODLA and various individuals at every institution. Would greatly
appreciate it if you could promote this event state-wide.

ITLE Faculty Forum, Grand Opening Announced
Senior Vice President & Provost Dr. Marlene Strathe has announced a
special faculty forum and open house on September 22 to celebrate the
grand opening of the Institute for Teaching and Learning Excellence
(ITLE). ITLE has been created through the merger of Educational
Television Services (ETS), the Faculty Support Center, and Audio-Visual
Services. The latter two departments have joined ETS in the
Telecommunications Center, which will be open for tours from 1:30 - 4:00
p.m. on the 22nd. ITLE provides a wide variety of services to the OSU
faculty, including pedagogical and technical assistance geared for both
early-career and experienced faculty members. The forum will begin at
9:00 a.m. that morning in the auditorium at the Wes Watkins Center for
International Trade Development, and will feature 2 presentations on
subjects of great interest to OSU.
The opening session (9:00-10:15 a.m.) will be a special program on
copyright law and intellectual property rights. The presenter will be
Ken Salomon, a member of the Communications Practices Group of the
Washington, D.C. law firm of Dow, Lohnes & Albertson, PLLC. Mr. Salomon
was one of the principal negotiators for the higher education community
in developing the statutory language adopted by Congress in the
Technology, Education and Copyright Enhancement (TEACH) Act of 2002, the
new law that governs the use of copyrighted materials in online courses.
Mr. Salomon works closely with national higher education organizations,
such as the American Council on Education, the American Association of
Community Colleges, the Association of American Universities, the
National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges and
EDUCAUSE, particularly on legal, regulatory, and policy issues involved
in telecommunications, distance learning, copyright and computers. He
is a long-time member of the OSU Institute for Telecommunications
advisory Board. Joining Mr. Salomon will be Scott Fern from the OSU
Legal Counsel, to address how Oklahoma law and OSU policies relate to
this important subject.
At 10:30 Alan Cheville and Chuck Bunting, both of the School of
Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering,
Architecture, and Technology, will discuss an NSF-funded program
entitled Engineering Students for the 21st Century. This program is
focusing on ten electrical engineering courses, with the goal of
transitioning from knowledge-based to development-based programs. Too
often, students learn behaviors that let them succeed in class, but
these behaviors are not always needed to succeed in their career. This
process seeks to increase the knowledge content of a program without
increasing time to graduation. It also seeks to engage both current and
future faculty in integrating scholarship back into teaching. Come
early to guarantee yourself a seat to hear about this model for
improving the teaching/learning experience.
There is no charge for either of these sessions, but seating is limited.
Please let us know you are coming by sending an e-mail to
sam.welch at okstate.edu. No response is necessary to tour the ITLE
facilities. Drop by the Telecommunications Center between 1:30 and 4:00
p.m. for a close look at the services ITLE offers all OSU faculty
members.
