[Oacrao-l] Question about failing grades for non attendance

We talked about this at OU when we began to discuss a new drop policy on campus.  One thing you should keep in mind is that any "new" grade must be approved by the State Regents.  Even a new type of F or W grade.  That was part of our discussion with the Regents and on campus as we worked on our drop policy.

While we do not have a special grade to designate failing due to non-attendance, we do require faculty to select one of the following when they assign an "F" grade:


*         Student attended

*         Student stopped attending

*         No evidence of attendance

If they select the "stopped attending" option, we also require that they record an approximate date that the student stopped attending.  The attendance information is not recorded on the transcript, but is stored in our student information system.  This internal notation has worked well at OSU.

It has been suggested to us that we should create a grade of FN or NF to reflect failing a course for non-attendance versus an earned F.  I have some questions:

1.       Do you have such a grade?  If so what is it?

2.       Is that grade recorded on transcripts and grade reports or is it something you note internally?
