OSU-CHS received this same request. FERPA overrides any FOA/open records acts; therefore we could not release all of the information requested. And any students who requested that we withhold their information (buckley flag) were redacted. It’s my understanding that you would only have to release whatever your school considers to be directory information under FERPA. Any other info requested would be protected from release under FERPA unless written consent from the student is obtained. And again, any students with Buckley flags should be redacted from any lists sent to anyone.

Hello,

I received a request this morning (below) for our students’ directory information (did anyone else get this?). I have never received a request for this kind of information from someone who is not a military recruiter, so I was wondering if some of you could provide your school’s policy on this sort of request, or guidance about the Oklahoma freedom of information/public records guidelines, or just point me in the right direction for doing my own research?

I did find some information released by the OK attorney general: “Directory information’ may include a student’s name, address, telephone listing, date and place of birth, major field of study, participation in school activities, dates of attendance, degrees received, and most recent previous educational institution attended.” Could I cite this description and provide only that information to this individual?
