I’m not sure, but I think public institutions may have less leeway in responding to these requests than private schools. While FERPA overrides FOA, as state instructions I am not sure we can disregard information requests completely. It may be worth a quick visit with legal counsel if you are a state/public entity.

I’m with David on this.  Just because FERPA says we CAN release doesn’t mean we have to.  I wonder if your request was the same one I got a week or two ago – some honor society that wanted to contact our students about membership?  They cited FERPA.  I responded that we protect our students’ information and do not release to people outside of our campus.

Greetings, Corey. We are having a discussion on our campus about this sort of request. ORU considers directory information confidential unless the student has provided consent to disclose it. As such, we would not release it.

Hello,

I received a request this morning (below) for our students’ directory information (did anyone else get this?). I have never received a request for this kind of information from someone who is not a military recruiter, so I was wondering if some of you could provide your school’s policy on this sort of request, or guidance about the Oklahoma freedom of information/public records guidelines, or just point me in the right direction for doing my own research?

I did find some information released by the OK attorney general: “Directory information’ may include a student’s name, address, telephone listing, date and place of birth, major field of study, participation in school activities, dates of attendance, degrees received, and most recent previous educational institution attended.” Could I cite this description and provide only that information to this individual?
