NCES Updates Numbers and Types of Public Elementary and Secondary Local
Education Agencies

NCES has released the 2008-09 school year data from the Public
Elementary/Secondary Agencies Universe Survey of the Common Core of Data
(CCD) survey system. This First Look presents data on local education
agencies within the United States and the territories in the 2008-09
school year. Findings include:

* There were 17,735 operating local education agencies in the 2008-09
school year, and among those agencies, 13,809 were regular school
districts.

* Approximately 783,000 students enrolled in the 2,096 independent
charter agencies, districts in which all schools were charter schools.

* Twenty-six of the 13,809 active regular school districts enrolled
100,000 or more students.

The CCD and this report are products of the National Center for
Education Statistics at the Institute of Education Sciences.
