Technical Grant Writer
School of Science, The College of New Jersey
            The School of Science at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites outstanding applications for a new Technical Grant Writer position, starting in early 2014.             The grant writer will support the School of Science by working with the dean, faculty members, and staff members on the development, writing/editing, and submission of competitive grant proposals to external funding agencies. The grant writer will work on faculty-based research proposals, major cross-cutting proposals, and department-based proposals. Specific duties of the position include the following:
1.   Works with the dean, faculty members, and staff members on (a) idea/project/concept development, (b) writing/editing/reviewing, and (c) submission of competitive grant proposals to external funding agencies.
2.   Establishes liaison and maintains cooperative working relationships with other staff members, offices, and/or organizations whose functions impact on assigned responsibilities.
3.     Compiles and analyzes statistical, financial, and other data.
4.     Prepares clear, technically sound, accurate and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
5.     Attends and participates in on-campus and off-campus meetings, conferences, and/or events related to assigned responsibilities.
6.     Prepares correspondence.
7.     Plans, schedules, markets, and supervises grant-writing program events (e.g., training, seminars, workshops, etc.).
8.     Other duties may be assigned.

Education and Experience
            Candidates should have a Masters degree, from an accredited college or university, in a scientific discipline(s) or in a field related to the functions of the position. Other backgrounds will be considered as well, including candidates with doctoral degrees, ABD status, and those with baccalaureate degrees and a minimum of six years of relevant experience.
            The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of science and the complexities of effectively communicating science to different audiences, as well as deep experience with technical writing, including the preparation of successful grant proposal applications.

Preferred Qualifications
The Grant Writer will report directly to the Dean of the School of Science.  Qualifications for the position and personal attributes desired in the successful candidate include:
            • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
            • Knowledge of the principles and techniques essential to the preparation of successful scientific grant proposals, which integrate technical and persuasive writing skills.  In particular, the individual in this position must have knowledge of science and the complexities of effectively communicating science to different audiences.
            • Ability to organize and prioritize assigned work, analyze problems, and develop appropriate work methods.  The ability to multi-task and handle several different duties simultaneously.
            • Ability to prepare clear, technically sound, accurate and informative reports and correspondence containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
            • Ability to use computers and computer software with ease (including Microsoft Word, Excel; web-based tools, and similar software), and the ability and flexibility to learn new skills as different duties may arise.
            • Ability to work both independently and as a team member.  At times, the work is fast-paced, sometimes with long hours and with tight deadlines.  The position requires an individual who can handle this type of high-intensity work environment, and, at the same time, who can work in a collegial and calm manner, while maintaining a positive attitude.
            • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a broad range of individuals, groups, and personality types.
