Subject: [Oacrao-l] Pre-Cancel Enrollment for Non-Payment
Hello my good friends of OACRAO!
It appears the recent theme is cancelling for non-payment of tuition/fees. I have a couple of questions that are similar to what was recently presented, but a little different. I would appreciate your feedback to the questions below as we hope to review our current policy associated with pre-cancellation very soon.
1. Does your institution cancel students from any upcoming terms/semesters when they have an outstanding balance for the current term/semester (i.e. cancel for 2013 Summer when they owe for 2013 Spring)? This response is primarily concerning our OSU Gateway program...if OSU downloads a financial hold after we have opened enrollment, the student is contacted and give a period of time to clear the debt or make arrangements. If the student does not fulfill their obligation, the enrollment is cancelled.
2. If you do cancel, when do you run that process? We try to clear that process during the first week of August for the fall semester. Last week that our offices are open in December for the spring semester.
3. If you do cancel, do you exclude students who have a low balance due (i.e. $50.00)? Students are allowed to enroll with bursar permission for balances lower than $200. In Stillwater, it requires permission from the OSU bursar, if it is an OSU financial obligation.
4. At what point do you turn your students over to collections for any outstanding balance due? At the end of the subsequent semester, the student is turned over to collections. At the beginning of the next tax year, they are turned over for tax garnishment. (My theme song is "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch!"Perhaps you might want a copy of the song for your office?
As always I appreciate your valuable input!
Alan
